Somewhere Very Special - In East London!

London is constantly being reshaped and rebuilt. There are many office blocks that reach 30 years and then are pulled down to be replaced by newer, more modern structure. And that really isn’t as difficult as it looks because all previous builds have taken ever greater care to position their services and utilities more effectively.

But when you’re working on land that hasn’t really been touched for over a century AND has had services run over, under and through it with no regard to anything but speed – it’s a problem.

When McNicholas Construction contracted us to run 7 x 640mm diameter steel sleeves (UTX) crossings into an electricity sub station (this part of the City is expecting to use a lot of electricity in around three years’ time) we never expected to find quite so many established infrastructures.

Added to which, there was so much water seepage (from everywhere!) that the ground had to be impregnated with resin to allow drilling with minimal ingress.

Jonathan Moore, Project Manager, McNicholas Construction has long experience of this part of London which has always “been a nightmare area to work construction” but nevertheless “Chiltern acquitted themselves well and really knew what they were doing under very difficult conditions. I found them good people to work with - Lawrence was an excellent fellow to work with and Dave really knew his stuff.”
