Airports - Doncaster and Manchester

"Grim perseverance along with leading edge technology got the job finished."

When Britain’s newest international airport opened for its first flight to Majorca at the beginning of May 2005, Chiltern Thrust Bore breathed a huge sigh of relief.

The airport had opened on time despite the significant problems faced when driving the communications and power ducts in under all the runways and taxiways. The severe sand and gravel ground of South Yorkshire caused massive damage to many of the tools, but grim perseverance along with leading edge technology got the job finished.

The Manchester Airport work of the late 1990’s was a lot bigger job but nowhere near as difficult – although the added hazard of a still fully functioning runway did add a little extra spice from time to time.
